In a previous post I stated that my speedometer failed and I need to get it rebuilt. This will be the fourth time in about a year of pulling the steering column, which I hate. Each time I scratch it up and each time I sand and repaint it. This time I would like to have it powder coated to a more durable finish. I realize that it could still be scratched up if I’m not careful but hopefully not as easily. Anyone advocating this?
The color is black BTW.

It shouldn't be a problem to powder coat it, but I'm not sure why its getting scratched in the first place. I put a thick hand towel over it when pulling the cluster and drop it down, I don't always completely pull it out for a cluster issue unless absolutely necessary.
Yes, unfortunately it’s necessary. I’ve got to change out the POS turn signal mechanism (AGAIN) and correctly clock the rag coupler so might as well.
Have another question, I’ve heard don’t over lube your speedometer cable which I may have. Is that because it’s detrimental to the speedometer or so you don’t get oil on your feet?
Its because if the lube spirals its way up to the speedometer head unit its bad news...
I disconnect the speedo cable at the transmission end and hold it vertically with a rag and put a load of Kable-Eze in the end, shake vigorously and then repeat 2-3 times. It doesn't take much and the stuff will work its way up the cable sheath sufficiently in my expereience.
