For the past few years, whenever I drive the car in cooler weather (UNDER 50F), the speedo bounces erratically above 45mph....once the car warms up to about 140F, the bouncing will generally stop at all speeds.
This NEVER happens in the summer, or weather above 50F at any speed.
I disconnected the cable from the back of the speedo, added as much of the CableEase as I could, reinstalled....that lasted a little while in cooler temps, but eventually the bouncing returned below 50F.
It got me thinking that when the engine and trans warm up, this must have something to do with the bouncing calming down and that it must have to do with the gear in the transmission at the end of the cable and lube/unit warming up...
As I said, NEVER any speedo bouncing in temps above about 50F.
Any thoughts on this?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks, and a safe, healthy, happy New Year to you all!

Hi Jim,
Yes, it makes a spiraling noise clammer....but again, never in warmer weather or after the car warms up.
That speedo is no fun to remove :-(
I believe the whole speedo needs to be removed in order to service the speedo head, no?
Thanks!

What an understatement about fun.
Yep, the whole instrument cluster has to be removed just to gain access to the speedo head. And as long as you have it out, you ought to repair the tachometer also.
I have the same problem but with the tach. Grinds and jumps in cold weather until it warms up. Never in the summer. Had the tach rebuilt a couple of times over the years but still happens occasionally. I think it maybe the cable and not the tach itself, but I've learned to live with it
The tach in my 60 died and broke the cable, I had to pull the dash "pod' to gain access to it, since it was such a B---- to get out I had my speedo rebuilt at the same time, it too started to bounce around once in a while, Bob's Speedometer in Michigan did a great job on the tach & speedo, he even silk screened a new face on the tach. take your time with removing it , label all the wires coming from the other gauges and it will be fine.
Thanks rjk...oddly enough, when we had the body off this car back in 1980, Bob's Speedo was the place that redid the speedo and tach ....
That was a while ago for sure, but not that many miles...so not sure what has broken now or needs repair.
Being from SE Michigan, that would be a more convenient place to fix it again.
Thanks!
