Rolf,

Based on the rarity of M-22 transmissions in 1966 Corvettes (only 15 sold), I'd bet it's a M-21. However, the 3884694 Tag-Part Number is hard to track down. The other numbers make sense for a 1966 Muncie in a Corvette.

Try this web site. It may have the information you need. http://www.gearzone.net/muncie2.htm

When it comes to an M-22, the only ABSOLUTE is to remove the side cover and examine the angle of the gear teeth. On the web site provided for Gearzone, they have an excellent photo comparason of M-21 and M-22 teeth.
The fact that the case has a drain plug is possibly a good indicator, because until 1970, only M-22s got a drain plug. Although, it is too easy to add a drain plug. I add drain plugs on customers' Muncies all the time.

Rolf, according to Noland Adams book, the part number (on the tag) for the M22 on a 66 (or 67) vette should be 3879987. Otherwise the case number and tailhousing number are the same as those on M20, M21, and M22 transmissions.

What's it sound like? Does it sound different than other transmissions? I understand that the M22's have a distinct chine due to the pitch of the gear teeth. They don't call 'em rock crushers for nothing!

3884694 isn't a Corvette usage - the tag itself must be from a passenger car; the '66-'67 M22 was 3879987. If it howls in 1-2-3 and is quiet in 4th (and has 20-degree helix angles on the gears), it's probably a conversion of an M21 to an M22, with the drain hole added.
