Not working properly. Has never seemed to get much past 130 degrees even though laser measured 160-180. Disconnected lead to sending unit and grounded it. Needle maxed out. Changed thermostat and sending unit that I purchased from Echler's. Sending unit 44707. Thermostat 45272 (robertshaw). Not cheap but what the heck. Anyway, took car for 20 minute run. Outside temperature was around 40 degrees. Temp gage at end of run registered 100 degrees and laser read 150 degrees. Did not use teflon when installing sending unit. What do you think the problem might be?

Have you checked to make sure a previous owner did not put one of those resistor type fix it pieces in the car to “fix” the problem?
You can test the sending unit with a multimeter and a bowl of hot water. If the sending unit is producing the correct resistance, you know its either in the gauge or the wiring to it. You could bypass the existing wiring with a long jumper cable from the sender to the gauge to see if that solved the problem.
