I have a 65 big block coupe clone with a zz454 crate motor. The VIN is too early to originally be a 396 car. I have some overheating issues when idling on hot days. I've replaced hoses, clutch, set timing, etc., and made improvements, but not quite there yet. I noticed the radiator doesn't seem to fill up the shroud. I'm guessing someone put a big block core support and shroud, but maybe a small block radiator? The fin width on the rad is 18" with a 22" overall width. It sits in there nicely and everything lines up, it just has that gap. Does this look like a simple (but expensive) 20" dewitts aluminum would drop right in and line up with the bottom pins? I've sent a note to Dewitts but haven't heard back yet and thought someone could help ID the mystery rad/support/shroud setup I have and see if anyone recognizes that radiator brand. Thanks, Brian
What you have appears to be an aftermarket SBC radiator, probably of copper/brass construction.
The gap at the side of the radiator suggests there is room to install an aluminum 396 radiator. Such a radiator would cool significantly better than the aftermarket piece you now have.
Keith and Jim, thanks for the replies. Things like the pulleys are also from 67 BB so wouldn't surprise me if shroud was as well.
I would like to put an alum BB rad in there, but am guessing I can't (easily) if the core support is for SB. I haven't found any measurements online for comparisons of the core supports.
Bingo! that's what you have. You could get the less expensive Direct Fit model. This one uses a 20" core and measures 24.5" total. CLICK HERE
Tom, that's exactly the one I was hoping to be able to get. Seems to meet all my needs/criteria. I had sent the same question to your sales email as I wanted some reassurance of fit before making the purchase. Thanks.
