Looking for ideas on adding additional (besides the dash) speakers to my 62's new stereo AM/FM/USB radio.
Kick panel was one area, and have rejected that from an esthetic choice, but may have to revisit that decision.
Looking for other ideas.
And what speakers would you recommend?
I only have the soft top, so that area is already taken..
I have never given this much thought because my Wonderbar works but there’s nothing of interest to me on am so I listen to the engine! Anyway, I think you are fortunate in a way because the sound quality of new modern small speakers can be incredible so no need to cut six inch holes in bodywork anymore. I suggest you investigate the best small speakers to place under the dash or behind the seats. You might be able to place them in the area of the top or even lower ahead of the tank. The thought of cutting any holes in one these cars is cringe worthy to me but she’s your car. Good luck.
I spent a considerable amount of money on a retro sound radio, kicker sub woofer with dedicated amp, kick panel speaker and the only crappy dual speaker in the original speaker location available and it still sound shitty at 70 miles per hour with the top down. I am old school and still like to listen to the radio. I have no music downloaded to my phone or anywhere else. If I did I would not have spent the money I did for what I have and would have gone the Bluetooth and Bose speaker on top of the dash route. Since I am committed this far I am looking for some small factory enclosed speakers that will sit on top of the dash in the “pocket” of the wrap around windshield that won’t impede my vision, probably Bose. I will eliminate the kick panel speakers as they are worthless. You need to get the sound up in your face with the top down or you are wasting your time and money.
To get good volume with qualiity sound with minimum product exposure your going to have to use the center speaker area as a bass driver only using a bridged input (sub out) from an amp. No mids or highs. Then work on the kicks for midrange driver speakers only. Lastly would be mounting small tweeters remotely on each side of your dash. Its a lot work and $ for sure but if your the audiofile type its worth it.
Not legal in some areas and unsafe in all areas; there are warning honks from other drivers, emergency vehicles that need the roadway, etc.. Not good.
I tried the Hidden Custom Audiosound speakers behind the seats, I don't know if they would fit under the seats nor what kind of sound they would produce... Wasn't real impressed with them.
Alternatively I have posted this setup many times with a simple center dash speaker of 140W and an inexpensive amp and a passive bazooka - looks original and sound is not bad..

Yes this would work IF you don’t mind cutting up your dash OR you could mount them on the top corners of the dash as I suggested in my post. Your much better off with a 58 up car with the speaker mounted on top of the dash then the off center in the dash face like my 57. The sound will be much better bouncing off the windshield. What ever you do don’t use kick panel speakers as they are a waste of money with regards to the sound they provide.
Abs panel and speakers from Ecklers. Painted to match, strong enough to support a small fire extinguisher and no damage to original panels if future owners want to go back to original.
I've been thinking about this on and off for years. I am not looking for an audiophile experience (I am, after all, Audiophobe), just some extra clarity in sound at 50mph. The music is volume is fair to poor at higher speeds then blasting at a red light.
I just did a 2 minute Google search and found that there are some small Bose Blu Tooth speakers that look like that can be stuck anywhere and can be strapped, simply placed on a seat or floor, or even velcro(ed). No wires or cutting. You can stick them anywhere and move or remove them anytime and use them when your at the park, sitting at the car show, or on your deck.
Some would consider a lazy or unfinished option.
They are 4"x4"×1.9" and the reviews are great.
There lots of other choices, brands, sizes, qualities, and prices.
I'm probably going to give one (or 2) of these a try in the Spring.
Just a thought.
I have the Wonderbar repro.
I give it 3 out of 5 start rating.
I use it basically for an amp for Blu Tooth music from my phone.
Looks great.
Sound is fine.
Very clumsy to use. Seek basically useless.
AM still basically useless (prob not entirely the radio's fault) and FM not far behind.
I have the apparantly common volume problem where you can't find the sweet spot.
On my 67 I built custom kick panel housings to hold 6.25" speakers. I angled them in a criss cross fashion the best I could and still allowing easy in and out access. It took several iterations on depth and angle when building the stick framework. They are powered by an external 400 watt amp and being a C2 I made a sub box for a compartment behind the seats. With top down, sidepipes i have no problem listening to anything on the freeway.

I have already done it on a 66. No cutting just sound proofing all around the speaker and sealing off opennings with various adhesive backed closed cell foam to insure a good bass sound output. Used a small Alpine KTA-30FW amp bridged to power it. The other 2 channels of the 4 support the midranges and micro tweeters. All speakers were Hybrid Imagine and Legatia series.
