Default tachometer quit

The tach on my '67 suddenly quit; was no "wavering" activity prior. Is this most likely the tach-distributor cable? Do I replace the entire cable housing or just the inner cable?
Looks like a major pain to get at it under the dash; any tips?

You can get your hand under the dash very carefully and unscrew the tach cable from the tach. Start the engine and ck. to see if the cable is spinning. If not, you know the head is most likely ok, unless it sieged and caused cable to break. Then unscrew cable at dist. now you can ck. cable for breakage. If all good, probably cross shaft and dist. main shaft stripped which will require rebuilding dist. or replacing. I rebuilt mine. Not that bad of a job. If it"s just the cable you just replace it.

Mine just failed and it was the worm gear in the Tach. Roger in TN fixed it for me.

I have troubleshot as RAQ suggested and the cable at the distributor was kinked causing the inner cable to finally break; have ordered a new one and also the "worm gear" in the distributor. Anyone have suggestions on how to get the new cable through the firewall? It appears there's a diaphragm it goes through from looking at the parts catalogs. Thanks to all!

That's just a large rubber grommet that fits in the firewall hole which can be replaced or reinserted. keeps the mice out.
