Default '63 Ignition Switch

As I'm assembling my gauge cluster, I can't seem to get the ignition switch to "fully seat" into the position.

I have a positional washer on the backside but the entire case is held off a bit.

Can you guys tell me if this is normal, or am I missing a spacer/washer for the backside of the switch?

Thanks, Pat

what is the part # on your switch? It doesn’t look original?

No part # on the item. It does say Made in the USA, and is the one I took out of it.

Also, the original, as well as the new Lectric Limited wire harness plugs in as it should.

But like you said, it sure doesn't look right to me. Looks like I'm missing a spacer or something similar.

It definitely could be an old aftermarket item. Sure doesn't look like a correct fit to me also.

Thanks for the pic Glenn. That one looks like a much better fit.

I think I'll pick up the replacement tomorrow. Unfortunately, I know it will probably be manufactured overseas!

I went to the auto store, and looked at the one the books say I need.

I pulled it out of the box and its (almost), exactly like the one I took out of the car.

I say almost because it doesn't have the spacer sleeve, and of course it's made in Taiwan.

I'm wondering if the gauge housing could've an anomaly? It is an early (November), build.

Here's a pic of the backside of the gauge panel.

Pat your cluster is the right one. Original switches had a special tab to lock in place with the escutcheon. In the harness was a special flat lamp bracket held with a screw, as yours is set up for. The lamp illuminates the key slot for better aim at night.

My 63 coupe had a aftermarket switch too. It has a threaded backup nut to keep tight. It would loosen on occasion so I got a original switch and reconnected the dangling lamp base.

Ill add photos later.

This is the lamp base. Someone cut this one but it should be part of the harness.

It mounts in that box next to the switch. This is a Feb built cluster.

Thanks Rich!

I did hook up the light with the new wire harness.

Pat

Also, the large red wire coming from the switch....is that the one I should add a fuse into?

Also a fuse to the lighter, and glovebox lamp?

Thanks again,
Pat

Pat,

Ok but I think the lamp may not work with the repro switch. Just thought of that. Glove box already fused(Courtesy lamps fuse). I forget if 63 lighter is fused or not. If not, good idea to add a 15amp for that.

You'd be better to add fusible links like the 67's had instead of a big 30Amp on the Red wireOne would go at the starter Bat+ terminal at the solenoid, the source of the main feed to the entire electrical system. I'd have to check wire color, it may be black.

You could add others at the alternator and Buss bar(horn relay), along with the Battery Gauge source at Bat+ at the solenoid. This is a separate wire from the main feed wire.
