Just make curtain that it pivots open and closed freely. When heated, the external spring heats and weakens causing the external counterweight to drop opening the internal plate to let exhaust freely flow through the side or under exhaust system. Be sure to check for free movement (pivoting). If seized close, noticable performance issues will prevail..... Trust me!
Mine was relatively seized. I bought a spacer and removed mine on my 65 Coupe. If removed, this WILL create a "Worming up" Issue in colder climates.
Get rid of the heat riser, even when open it is an obstruction in the exhaust flow. If you want it to look stock, get someone to cut the baffle out and leave the weight and spring in place.
Pull it down as far as it goes (not quite straight down) and tie it down with wire. That's the quick inexpensive way to eliminate the riser function. If you like the way it goes without it, you can always remove it and replace it with the spacer.
Easier to just wire it open as described. Did it ten years ago. Easier hot starts due to less fuel percolation in the carb bowls and no popping sounds out of the RH exhaust manifold are the expected benefits. Choke may take longer to kick off in very cold weather but I dont drive it in the winter.
