Fixing leaking diff cover gasket without pulling the diff???
My rear diff cover on my 63 is slowly leaking oil at the bottom of the seam
It has the paper gasket in there
It has recently been rebuilt and I am not thrilled about pulling everything out again
now that things are torqued properly
Looking on past threads it appears that there is a way to pull the cover without having to pull
the entire diff out
You do have to remove the spring and loosen the front mounts but they didn't go into detail
Is this even possible?
Is there way of pulling the cover away from the diff far enough to get sealant in without pulling the
entire cover off?
Glenn, yes you can remove the cover in the car, however it is easier and safer to remove the diff to make the repair.
A fresh rebuilt diff should not leak, so if it is then was the pinion seal correctly installed as well? if there is no sealant on the yoke splines even with a new seal it will leak once you start driving.
I agree with Gary, make it a punch list item after you finish and pull the whole thing to check everything that may leak in the differential. the good thing is it will come apart easy.

It does have the vent an the bolts have not punctured the case
I have wiped it off enough and watched it leak that it is for sure coming from the seam
I have not driven the car yet so it is leaking out just sitting there
I have tightened the bolts enough as I feel comfortable
and the leak is slow enough that it has never dripped on the ground
but given enough time it would

That’s no fun Glenn. I’ve had to remove my cover twice now. Once was due to a hairline crack in the Muskegon cover, which they sent a new one the next day. The second was when the vent cap interfered with the Ridetech crossmember because the vent hole was in a different location than stock. I did what Gary recommended both times and used a grey sealant, can’t remember the number, and painted the diff face first. Set the gasket and then painted the gasket with the sealant. No leaks either time. My diff probably has a couple miles on it as I rotate it monthly to keep oil on the gears.
