On my 64. My battery, gas & temperature gauges are not working correctly. The battery gauge bounces from -40 to +40 constantly, the gas gauge does not move and the temp.
gauge floats around. The next morning I had a dead battery. Checked the electrical system and found with car off I had 2.5 + amperes leakage in system. Replaced alternator & voltage
regulator. This solved problem of amperage leakage & dead battery. Problem is all gauges are still not working correctly and the engine is wanting to dye unless I increase RPM above
idle. The 10 amp. fuse that (top fuse on the left in the box) keeps blowing out. Question - is the one of the 3 gauges shorting out and the cause of my problem. Advise please.
I was hoping one of the experts would help you, but here is a shot. From the schematic I found on line for a 64, the gas gauge and temperature gauge are fed from the top fuse as well as the parking brake warning light. The first thing I would try is to trace the hot wire on the gauges to try to find a short that would blow the fuse. It could be the green wire to the temperature sending unit in the engine bay or the wire going to the gas gauge or the wire to the emergency brake warning light. You can start with a visual inspection of the wires at the gauges and sending units. Then, if you disconnect the wire at the gauge and it does not blow the fuse, you can find which circuit it is. Of course, using a VOM meter to find the grounded wire or gauge is the best way, don't forget to unhook the battery when testing ohms.
Maybe one of the experts will jump in and give you a better testing sequence.
Looks like you are smarter than I am, I forgot the backup lights also come off of the top fuse. Good to hear you got it fixed.
As I recall, isn't Greenwood, IN around Indy?
