Does anybody know of a replacement battery for the Delco Group 24A? This battery has the flat top and I need a replacement with the flat top so I can use my Tar Topper battery topper. Looking for an upgrade in quality. Thanks.
Not sure if there is a Walmart near you but I used their EverStart battery's in all my vehicles and even my Back hoe! I use the top of the line batteries with the 3 year full replacement warrantee and they do honor it. Best save your receipt but you bring back a bad battery after 2 years, 11 months, and they replace it... just pay sales taxes!
I just replaced the AC Delco 6 year battery with a group 34. I like the 34 because of the higher CCA than the 24. The 34 is a shorter battery but that makes it easier to slide in. I use the plastic shelf spacer that is on the battery when it is sold with my Camaros and Chevelles but on the Vette with the fake tar top it didn't need the spacer.
I looked at a lot of battery's including the reproductions but settled for the EverStart mainly because of its dependability and warranty. I did return one after 4 months because it failed to hold a charge and they immediately replaced it at only tax charged.. It is possible that my Camaro cooked the battery because of the 15.8V running voltage, A bad voltage regulator would do that. After changing the battery and regulator the running voltage fell to 13.6V. Much better.
The Vette now spins faster and starts easier. I'm happy.
There is a reproduction battery that already resembles the original but its between $339 and $359 and very short warranty PLUS shipping and warranty shipping is not worth the value just as a "hey look" type of battery. If you live locally to a dealer who stocks them they MIGHT give a break but Walmart was so much easier and better. Other brands offer 24 and 34 batteries but from experience the distributors give you a hassle for warranty replacement.
It will be in stock soon. Ask the local store manager to order one or order on line and pick up at your local store when its available. Not sure if your state requires a core but check, bring any old battery to turn in if required. At least that's how I do it. If you need something soon their group 24 battery is pretty good too. I have them in my Chevelles. Also, if you are checking on line for inventory its not always accurate. Mine said they were out of stock but there were 4 at the store!
FYI, if anyone plans to buy a Delco reproduction battery from one of two sources that I know of > Battery Central Mall there is an 8-10 week wait for one to be manufactured. I paid $349 to replace the one that I've had in my '66 for over 7 years now (and still going strong). But once I was told how long the wait was, I got a refund. I'll use the info above to buy an alternative battery to use with a topper when it's time.

if the battery that is in your 66 was made by Antique Auto Battery, I would not be in a rush to buy another battery. Two of my cars have them and they are over 12 years old. I just went to charge one of the batteries since it has been sitting for 8 months and with a 2 amp charge it was fully charged in 15 minutes.

Do you need a anode extender when using the tar top on the 34 battery?
i just bought 5 NAPA AC DELCO batteries for my cars. All in stock and picked up within an hour. Id go with them. My Reproduction red top batteries lasted me 10 years, but no longer would hold a charge/load. ARA. All batteries were 24 and 34 series

NAPA has two batteries that will fit your needs. 7534 and 7524. The 7534 is slightly smaller(8" height) and fits very easily into place.
The 7524 is the same size as the original battery and is a PIA to install.
"Legendary Battery Toppers" is what i use. Excellent quality.
Legendary Battery did call me back and they seem to have the only topper with the yellow and black caps that are correct for a 59 and 60. Owner seems to be slowly getting out of the business and it appears that there might not be too many of the toppers with the black and yellow caps remaining. Thanks for the lead
