I don't have original motor , I'm building a driver . My current dist. is not tack drive , I'm looking to buy an HEI mechanical tack drive , they are priced all over the place , I put an inexpensive one ,aka cheap , in a hotrod I built . Ran great , electric tack hook up , easy , I'm not familiar with the current hei tack drive hei's and would like some advise .The last mechanicl tack driven corvette I owned ran off the drive at rear of the generator , worked great , Also , clocking the hei , any particuler way ?
Thank You , Bob
I've had the MSD tach drive distributor with the 6 series control box which worked great. I sold that car and am now running the factory tach drive distributor with a Pertronix Ignitor II and Pertronix coil in my present car. It also works well and no issues so far. I don't trust the cheap Ebay distributors made overseas. I had one before, although not a tach drive, that didn't last. I also don't like how big the factory-style HEI distributor is. Good luck!
I'm running small cap HEI tack drive distributor on '66 W/383. MSD Blaster coil & MSD 8.5 MM wires -- Sniper efi.
Thousands of miles & no problems. Also tight but will fit under stock shielding
I agree with Black Magic. I have a small cap tach drive distributor (off Ebay) to fit under the shielding. Their electronics have a bad reputation for failure so I just use the magnetic pickup and wire it to a standard GM ignition module mounted remotely with a big *** heat sink on it.
I’m using a TSP unit that is probably made in China. However, it’s been working for several years now with zero issues and you don’t have to have a separate box.
I have 3 Ebay HEI Tach Drive dist and one Oldsmobile HEI in a boat. All are the cheap 59 dollar ones. But wait they are all billet aluminum and built very well. The coil looks to be the same as the ones in a MSD. That's weird. And they work great. Go figure.
