Have a 65 365hp 4 speed. When car is started I need to pull T-handle to move shifter into reverse, after car is moved into first gear the shifter no longer locks out reverse in all subsequent shifts. Is the mechanism supposed to work this way or is something amiss with the reverse lockout? Concerned I might accidentally shift into reverse while driving and damage my transmission. Any insights/advice would be greatly appreciated!
Mine didn't lock out when I first bought it but it was anytime, not just after starting. I had to push the lockout rod back down and retighten the set screw. Maybe yours is not quite fully down. I don't know for sure but it's easy enough to check.

I’m not sure how you could accidentally shift into reverse while driving, it’s far to the left and up, I’m pretty sure you don’t downshift to 1st , and that would be the only gear in that general direction. I hated the lock out and removed the shifter and linkage, installed a Hurst look a like shifter and linkage, no more issues with the lock out rod. To look at it you can’t tell from the original.
Unscrew the ball and lift the tee handle up and make sure that something hasn't happened to the rod, either a loose set screw or broken off on the bottom sounds like it's not quite long enough to engage the slot. Could also happen if the ball is not screwed down all the way so that it pushes the rod down.

When mine wasn't working it would go into reverse easier than into first when sitting at a light. I would have to shift into second and then carefully move it up into first. Then ease out the clutch to make sure before the light turned green.
With the lockout rod installed correctly it's a piece of cake now.
