I have not updated my ongoing thread on the '64, because the things I have accomplished have been minor nuts-and-bolts stuff and not really worth posting. But the small stuff does add up over time. I'm getting ready to do a couple more involved steps soon and would like suggestions on which order to do it in.
The windshield needs to go back in, and I have a new dash pad to install. Does it make more sense to do the glass first, so as not to endanger the new dash pad? Or do the dash pad first, having more freedom of access with the glass out?
Taking pad off, to clean up windshield base. You can clean, paint and prep for eventual pad replacing to. I would do windshield first. I want a really good seal on that windshield.

I'm hearing a consensus here - thanks, it will be done that way.
I had hoped to keep the dash framework in, I've already replaced the heater core, inner heater box and various other stuff under there. Of course that was before the 57-year old vinyl on the dash got a crack in it. Talk about project creep, this was going to be a "patch things up and just drive it as-is" car. I'm still not going for shining perfection, but there's so many things that "as long as I'm in this far, I might as well....."
RRM, if you check my build post you can see I just installed my windshield with Holt’s help. I did not have the dash in place, but heater box, wiper etc. are. My body guy insisted it should be done last. Frankly, as easy as it went in it should not matter. If you are changing pads, I think I would remove the dash for that. I’d also install the windshield then, to avoid potential “mess” on the pads.
Thanks Pop! I'll be out there this weekend but frankly the property "to do" list is pretty big. A few extra things like drain and store the hoses - we had a couple nights in high 30's and one of these days that's going to seem warm. I put a hole in the sidewall of the rider mower so that's another item. So this trip may be more prep, learning and getting started. I'm really wanting to be putting together instead of taking farther apart but the advice and reasons make a lot of sense so out comes the dash. On the bright side, it will be one more thing I will be able to say I've done and learned.
Windshield install can be messy messy messy
I put my glass in first and am so glad I did.
I have done a lot of reading in old threads on the task. There are several saying something to the effect of "I'd heard the stuff is a mess, but never thought it would be THIS bad! "
Forgot to mention my thanks to Chris (Elwood13) for pics and advice. If I had read about the glue below the radio I had forgotten it. A quick call to Texas, and it truly was a piece of cake to remove.
I did my windshield last. I was afforded the luxury of setting the dash pads and the radio speaker through the windshield opening. Plus I didn't have to reach through the driver's door to work the ignition key while setting the dwell and timing.
Geez, maybe I'll just leave it out, and wear a face shield while I drive!
I have a sleeve of Laurence....71XX something. That's the stuff you caulk-gun in there after the string is out? What is the other stuff - sealer - you put BEFORE? The Shop Manual speaks of sealer 3M-1170 going on first, then installing the glass with weatherstrip. Then 2 beads of that same sealer on the outside of the rubber, followed by a "moderate quantity" of 3M-6699B cement which would be the Laurence "Black Goop Of Death" inside the rubber against the glass? A search for 3M 1170 shows that these days that number is a tape, not a paste.
