Default 427 block engine pad question

Hi guys, I am looking at a 427 block. The casting number on the rear of the block is 3904351 which designates this as a 400 horse 427 but I am curious about the engine pad number. TO92IJC. I know this means that it is a Tonowanda engine built the second day of September bit I don't know what the I JC stand for?. I read somewhere that the IJ is a 385 horse block but I am not.sure.

That block was used for ALL 427 engines in 67 for ALL corvettes and Impalas. JC is for a 427/400 though

Block decodes as:

T = Tonawanda
09 = September
21= 21 day of September
JC= 427 400 HP engine (L36 engine with 3 x 2BC & 4-speed)

Larry

Before you wonder; yes, Chevrolet used the capital I stamp as a numeral 1 on these stamps, so Larry's decoding is accurate.

Have the block thoroughly inspected. Mine was ultrasonic and pressure tested. It may be good but you should be very suspicious why it’s not in the original car. The 942 block I bought clearly had a hard life, but it was a 4 bolt with correct date and the repairs were worth it. It may need a sleeve or something. My point is there’s usually a good reason it’s not in the original car. Once u do the deal I’d appreciate a PM to let me know what it’s worth. People often ask what these are going for. Best wishes

there asking $4500 intake to pan and ran when pulled. I have a 69 427 but the p/o had it rebuilt and bored .60 over with a giant cam...12 to 1 compression. Supposed to be the original block but the block surface was decked and the numbers are no longer visible.

Price not surprising. Sounds like it’s a long block? He may negotiate if eager. He apparently knows what he has. Best wishes. Keep us posted.

No I did not buy the engine. I eas originally going to replace my factory block with this motor due to the fact that mine was decked, bored. 60 and has domed pistons equating to 12 to 1 compression from what I was told. I think at this point I will just work with what I have.
