Default Side Mirror Quickie

The

CORVETTE RUBBER 1953-1967 CHEVROLET CORVETTE OUTSIDE MIRROR BASE GASKET

is shot on my car and the mirror wobbles. Just to be certain (as I am learning more about these beasts) if I remove the base mounting screws to replace the pad....will the inner mount fall off.

I have read "drill the rivets out that hold the mounting plate on the door."

Which makes me think a stock original should have the mounting plates riveted in place. But....just to be sure...any wisdom out there? Much appreciated.

Scott - Have you tried just tightening the allen/socket head screw that holds the drivers door outside rear view mirror to the bracket? The screw faces inboard, toward the vent window. If that screw is tight and the mirror 'base' still seems to be loose, then remove the mirror (by removing that one lone screw) and then you'll be looking at the base mount which sits on that rubber gasket and is attached with two screws. The threaded nut plate that's in the inside of the doorskin is secured with a rivet. I'm betting that rivetted nut plate is in good shape so just a matter of tightening up the base mount screws.
Sorry, don't have any pics of the pieces which is a surprise because I found that base mount to be loose but one screw had corroded into that nut plate and had to be drilled out...very slowly and carefully.
Just found one pic that shows the base mount after the mirror has been removed.

Thank you! So I checked:

Have you tried just tightening the allen/socket head screw that holds the drivers door outside rear view mirror to the bracket? The screw faces inboard, toward the vent window. Tightened Allen screw. Still wobbly.

If that screw is tight and the mirror 'base' still seems to be loose, then remove the mirror (by removing that one lone screw) and then you'll be looking at the base mount which sits on that rubber gasket and is attached with two screws. Done & mirror removed, screws are tight and base is tight on the door.

The threaded nut plate that's in the inside of the doorskin is secured with a rivet. If I remove both base screws at the same time will the inner mount fall off?

That nut-plate is attached to the door skin with a single solid rivet. If you are sure the base-mount is solid and not rocking around, the only other thing that could be the cause of a loose side view mirror is that allen screw. Maybe try cleaning out any old paint or dirt inside that hole on the base-mount and also double check that the threads are clean on the mirror stand. It kinda sounds like the screw is bottoming out but that 'tapered section' is not making full contact to the mirror stalk.
While it's apart, try putting the screw back into the mirror stand and see if it runs all the way down.
