Default 1964 Column

On my new 64 I notice the upper column was loose so I pulled it apart yesterday and found a bubba fix.
Also didn't they do away with the screw and jam block on the 64?
I will be ordering a new tube, this must be common as I put one in my last 64.
Anyone have a breakdown of this column? I have 63, 64 & 65 shop manuals and I can't find it in them.
Thanks,
Joe

No screw and wedge in 64. The bell casting used was a holdover from 63, but using the tabs and retainer.

Thank you for the reply. That is what I thought but wanted to be sure.
I assume the PO didn't want to replace the tube so he put the wedge in as a shortcut.

Another question, is the column and signal switch bowl painted interior color, mine is blue, or flat black?
Hard to tell from my old stuff.

63 is interior color, 64 up is semi-gloss black as far as I know. Never owned 66, 67. I use trim black. Perfect match.

If you do not have an AIM for a '64 check out the Paragon on line catalog for C2s. Steering column parts start on page 40 of the catalog. It has excellent blow-up illustrations of all assemblies, including a 64 steering column and all associated components. Actually, the Paragon illustration is a cleaned up version of the one in the AIM. Using the illustration, you will be able to identify all the parts you need to assemble your steering column correctly. https://www.paragoncorvette.com/down...ts-catalog.pdf

Also order a new lower bearing and race as well.

When I installed electric power steering in my '64, I had issues with the turn signal cam on the steering wheel. I could not get the wheel to close the gap between the wheel and the bell. Come to find out that I had a '63 bell and a '64 tube. I know it was a '63 bell because it was blue on the inside. The bell was 1/4 shorter than the '64 so that made the gap bigger. I was able to grind down the plastic turn signal cam so that it took up some of the gap. To make it look normal, I used black door edge molding on the lip of the bell and it looks like it was designed that way.

Thanks for the info and I hope I do not have the same situation.

Thanks, I just assumed I would find the information in the 63, 64 or 65 GM shop manuals.
I have an AIM and will check it out.
