My speedometer doesn't work so I pulled the cable and this is what I found. I tried to spin the speedometer but it is seized.
I guess I am taking out the cluster and sending the speedometer out.
I will not do that until I am ready to go back north.
That's what mine looked like after my speedo failed this past summer. I would think they engineered the cable with the plastic interface so that when the speedo seizes up while your driving, you do not fail the transmission speedo driven gear. Sent my gauges out to Corvette Specialists of MD, did a real nice job. Picked up a new cable from Paragon IIRC and got that in. Did the LED conversion on the bulbs and now due to the common mission creep thing, the pedal cluster is out and apart as there was wobble at the clutch arm/pin junction.
Nice to see you're keeping busy and not just sitting back enjoying the "winter" in Fla.
Joe I'm sure the "new" '64 FI will be better than new when your done.

I believe the plastic cable tip is indicative of a replacement cable. The factory tach and speedo cables I've seen have a square profile press-formed on the end of the continuous cable and a crimped on stop collar to keep it registered in the sheath and gauge head.
Here are the things you need to switch over to the speed-minder option at least for a ‘68.
Remember I searched the part numbers from the AIM manual all but the speedometer are the same for other Chevy’s from the era like Camaro and Chevelle.
As such they don’t have the markup that would come with the Corvette name.
