Hi all. Has anyone ever used a chem paint remover on a c2 hood .
Been reading about aircraft paint removers that are safe for fiberglass???.
Thanks,
Frank.
Yes I've used it for 45 years, Formula A Clean Strip just make sure you get it all off when cleaning up.
I've cleaned up with lacquer thinner when finished or stoping for the day.
Hi Frank,
Thought I would drop my 2 cents into the conversation. When I stripped my 1954 it had the original paint plus 1 repaint. I started using the paint stripper which required thinner to clean up. Though it worked, it was a mess plus the hazard of fumes etc. and with the old fiberglass there was some issues with the fiberglass softening so I stopped that pretty quickly. Then I went to the "razor blade" method and it sure went quicker as both finishes came right off down to the red primer. From there it was a bit of sanding to get to the glass. Guess I would try a razor blade first just to see if it works for you....be careful not to gouge the glass but once you have the feel for it you may be satisfied.
Good Luck!
John
If you go the stripper route..I have always in the past used the Aircraft stripper. It is pretty nasty.. but works well. For kicks, on stripping the 62 over the fall, I heard good reviews on the Citrus stripper. Logistically easy.. avail at Lowes, Home Depot, etc. I was very pleased with how it worked relative to what I have used in past years. Seems strip just as well. Water soluble. Much easier on the smell. Costs less than Aircraft. Give a gallon a try.. see what you think.
I've also used the single edge razor blade technique. Sometimes it doesn't work very well depending what type paint is on the car. If it works it's pretty easy also.
Razor blade stripping.
In the past I used Aircraft stripper with good success but the "new formula" stripper just DOES NOT work at all. I've tried all the strippers available and no luck. I've gone to the razor blade and 80 grit DA......don't waste your money on the new strippers-junk.
I have done the single edge razor blade strip on a number of cars
The downside is you can nick the fiberglass. Actually you will nick the fiberglass
and thus the 80 grit sandpaper
That said, it is so much easier to clean up with a shop vac with a brush
I have found that having several different types of single edge razor blade holders
really helps on different shapes of the car, ie longer vs shorter handles
