Hi all , I know there is a lot out there about this topic . I'm about to try something different . I have on my 65 coupe the original starter switch . On the prong marked IGN , is this 12 volts in the start mode as well as in the run mode ? The way I'm going to get this , I have to be 100 percent correct .
Sincerely , Thank You , Bob P.S. Putting everything back together and trying to probe the fittings with a test light would be a PIA .
Thank You Factoid , on the 65 ign. switch , is there a post that has 12 volts in start mode and run mode ? I want to hook up a HEI with the proper wire rather than plug in at the resister on the firewall .
Here is what I did , I pulled the IGN switch , On my 65 switch , I checked continuity from the battery to the coil , good . In the starter mode , with the key turned to start I got good continuity to the IGN post and the starter post , released key and continuity to the IGN post where I will feed my HEI with a 10 AWG red wire.I took a wire fitting crimped to the 10 ga. wire . Filed it to fit down over the IGN. post . Used a very small screw and drilled into the switch , not too deep .,and at an angle .Screwed down tight , put everything back together , hooked up battery , with test light , The end of the 10GA. get 12 volts in start mode and run mode , FINALLY. some good guy on the you tube channel , I noticed he had an HEI , I e mailed him as how he hooked up . He answered right away and his method worked for me as well . Now my TACK will work too . In and works fine , got tach too !
Sincerely , Bob , 65GG coupe

All you had to do was leave the switch the way it was and bypass the Ballast Resistor
Those wires are only 18GA. From all the research I've did .12 GA. is the smallest to keep from over heating the wires . TWO 18 GA. wrapped together is ony 15 GA.
Thanks for the quick reply , Bob
Factoid is wrong , on my ign. switch , I have 12 volts from the same post , start and run , I used this post to run 10 gauge wire to HEI , works great . Thank You
Sorry, I misunderstood your question. I thought you were referring to the starter. On the ignition switch, you need to test it. My ‘64 does not have 12v on the ignition pin of the ignition switch when in the start position. Anyway, glad you got it sorted!
