Hi All: Excuse the tough pics in advance.. not a great angle for taking pictures...
So.. on my 62 project.. progressed to point of interior install. On replacing the inner firewall insulator... speedo cable routing. This can't be correct.. but I don't see any other way the speedo cable would approach, and then connect to the speedo. But look at that extreme angle of that cable as it enters the back of the speedo. No way that can be correct or last very long I am thinking operating with that much 'kink' in the cable housing.
Thanks in advance for any insights. PS. Get a look at that what I think is factory inspection markings on the inside of that inner dash. Someone's writing from back in 1961 / 1962.
Jim
1st Pic shows how it enters the back side of the inner dash
2nd pic shows cable attached to speedo at quite an angle as it exits that hole in the inner dash and bends over to join the speedo connection.
The cable goes staright back thru a hole directly behind the speedo in the dash support, it then goes straight back thru the firewall. It exits the firewall directly under the LH hood release "lever" that attaches to the hood resale cable, then the cable make fairly sharp bend down, and towards the drive tunnel

A '62 showing the holes in the innerdash. Left is speedo, right is tach.
A '60, backside of innerdash. Tach cable above/left of the speedo cable, right.
When the cables enter the innerdash holes it's almost a straight shot to the speedo and tach.

PS When you figure it all out... suggestion. Add a piece of vinyl tape on each cable with a tail sticking out, close to the tach and speedo heads. This is to prevent the cable screw on ferrules from falling forward trying to attach them. If the ferrules fall down and forward(away from the cluster) along the cable they are a bear to reach to get reconnected.
Here are two pictures of my 61. As stated the speedo is on the left, grey covering and the tach is the right one.
Notice how straight then go into the gauges.

Thanks all for the helpful pics. I may have missed the 2nd hole on my inner dash support panel. I will go look again. Seems obvious and as such I had been looking for some other hole as the alignment was obviously not right with hole I was feeding the speedo cable through. Don't know how I missed it. Let me go check again.
Job # 1 - 500, then repeats. Cool ! So my dash (or the whole car ??? ) was job # 124 out of that batch of 500 ?

Yes the whole car job #, 124th of 500. Usually on the underside of cluster, inner door skins, and maybe some other areas too. They probably put it on the cluster due to different engine HP and associated tach usage.
The job # is often close to the last 3 digits of the vin. If the last 3 digits of the vin is over 500, add the job# to 500 and it is likely close to the vin last 3 digits.
When i posted over 12 years ago, that both my doors had 142, or something similar written on the inside in pencil, i was told back then that that wasn't St.Louis's doing. Glad to see I am vindicated.

e.g. '59 job# 203. Car vin ends in "208"
Very cool info. I will check my vin in the morning.
FYI.. will update a pic in the morning... YES.. I found the other hole.. the one the speedo cable is supposed to go though. Thanks all !
Also.. the pics you'all provided also highlighted that the tach cable was not routed correctly either. It had been running from the firewall and going under the dash support and up to the tach input (previous owner down the line). Your pics pointed out it was supposed to go through one of the two holes. So did that as well. Thanks again !
Updated.. picture added below after I was able to see the 2nd hole on the rear of the inner dash support. Again.. Thanks all for pointing this out.
