Hi Patrick
Thanks for the link, i am still not certain as to some of the numbers, this is what i have so far, going from the;
VIN No: 40867S111959
4 = 1964
08 = Corvette
67 = Convertible
S = St Louis
Engine Code Stamp No: (engine front pad)
F0218RD (RD is very faint pretty sure its RD)
F = Flint
02 = Feb
18 = 18th Day
Vin Derivative Stamp No:
4111959 (marries in nicely with the vin tag under the dash)
Block Casting Date No:
B134
B = February
13 = 13th Day
4 = 1964
Block Casting No:
3782870
Needs to be decoded. ?

Trim Tag : (pictured below)
B17
B = Feb
17 = 17th Day
STYLE
867 = Convertible
TRIM
490 M = Saddle Tan Vinyl
PAINT
932 A = Saddle Tan (NCRS book tells me that all 1964 paint codes end in AA ????)
BODY
A - 065
A - I have read that the A suffix indicates its a AO Smith body, yet the VIN No. has the S which i believe is St Louis ???
065 - Needs to be decoded ????
What i am trying to determine is if the TRIM TAG is the correct one for this car or not, i cant see anything on the trim tag that indicates the car is 1964 and the lack of the AA on the paint code makes me think its not the correct tag ?. The car has been painted a different color and the trim changed to black, i have pulled the trim apart and there is enough saddle over -spray on the inside of some of the trim panels to convince me that the trim was originally Saddle Tan, if someone could help me finish the last bits of decoding i should have my answer.
Thanks to Al G for his help as well.
All the best
Tassie

The block casting number doesn't need to be de-coded. That is the correct casting number for a 1964 327.
932 is the correct code for Saddle Tan paint
Your body was the 65th, 1964 body built at AO Smith
The S in the VIN indicates that the car was assembled at the St. Louis plant
Trim code 490M is Saddle Tan Vinyl

Your trim tag appears to be correct for an A O Smith built body.

ALL 1964 (and other years as well) Corvettes were assembled at St. Louis, MO assembly plant, so the VIN of ALL 1964 Corvettes will have the letter 'S' to indicate St. Louis assembly plant.

However, there were two different plants that made the BODIES for 1964 (and other year) Corvettes. One was the St. Louis plant, the other was the A O Smith Ionia plant. The A O Smith bodies were shipped to the St. Louis Corvette assembly plant for final vehicle assembly.

Remember, we are talking about two different things here

1. The BODY assembly plants, which are either St. Louis (S or nothing on the TRIM tag in front of the body number) or A O Smith Ionia (A on the trim tag in front of the body number)
2. The VEHICLE assembly plant, which (in 1964 and many other years) was always and only the St. Louis Vehicle Assembly Plant (so the letter 'S' is added to the VIN number to indicate this).

Your body number is A - 065. That translates to
A = A O Smith Ionia body plant
065 - the 65th body off of that body line in that year.

Sometimes your reference material (the NCRS book) is not actually correct or totally accurate.

Check this out....

St. Louis paint code has two letters following the 3 digits. A O Smith paint code has one letter following the 3 digits

I'm not sure the part about St Louis using black primer is correct, unless that's specific to 1964 only.

Something isn’t jiving with me
The body number of 065 and a VIN of 11,xxx doesn’t match, although the build month of H seems to match the VIN

am I alone in not understanding or am I way off base?

A.O. Smith bodies STARTED production in JANUARY 64. This is one of the 65th convert body made at that plant.

When did A. O. Smith start building bodies? Wasn't it sometime in the January '64 time period? If I'm remembering correctly, then this would be the 65th convertible body produced at A. O. Smith and built on February 17th, 1964.

According to Noland's book, A was January in the '64 model year for AO Smith bodies.
