Default Oil Pan Thread Insert

I think I recall discussion of availability of the rectangular bar spot welded inside the oil pan that is threaded for the drain plug, but can’t locate the thread. I have a stripped one that I’d like to replace. Anyone know if and who offers this? Vette Products of Michigan (I think) makes pans, but don’t show this as an available part.

That could be a solution, but since the pan is off, I’d prefer to stay with the block. Guess I could make one easy enough. GM seems to use a soft steel and harder bolt, so instead of the bolt threads failing, the female ones strip. From my Lincoln and Nissan experience, they do the opposite. The bolt will fail first, making for easy repairs. OFL techs should never be given a wrench longer than 4 inches.

I’m wondering if that system would work on our thin steel pans. ?The example is in a thicker aluminum pan.

The Time-sert website shows kit # 07629:

1/2-20
Oil Pan thread repair “Tin pans only”

Will not work if the pan has used an oversized drain plug.

But:

This kit reduces the hole size from
1/2-20 to 7/16-20
Kit contains: Cbore, Driver tools,
5 inserts, 5 drain plugs with washers

Further Time-sert notes say possible to restore back to 1/2"-20":

Tin Pan Notes:

Early tin pans had steel bungs or nuts welded inside the tin pan.

Sometimes the pan internal (bung or nut) is too thin to drill out so
we restore the threads by reducing it to 7/16-20. No material is
removed with the p/n 0765 kit.

The hole must not have had any oversized drain plugs used.
You should also not have tried to re-tap the hole to straighten the threads
because you would have also removed material which we want to use to
roll the thread back out to hold our insert.
________________________________________ ________________

It may be possible to restore the 1/2-20 tin pan back to the original size
with our p/n 0122A aluminum kit, providing there is enough material to do so.
If the pan is removed you can visually see there is a min of 1/8 of material
around the threads. If the oil pan is still on the vehicle it may be possible to
check the thickness by using a short allen key to feel if there is a substantial
ledge where you can estimate material thickness which would accept drilling
and tapping. Tin pan thickness is unknown, some tin pans have plenty of
thickness to accept an insert some are too thin and may break out if trying to
drill and tap.

Why not weld the hole shut, drill and tap?

I know what you want.........and remember seeing a few of the GM repair/replacement pieces for sale a long time ago. Can't find anymore. This is the best I can do for you.

I believe Eckler's sells them. https://www.ecklers.com/oil-pan-drai...7-28461-1.html

Just get a grade 8 1/2"/20 nut tighten the bolt and nut in the pan and tack weld.

Maybe one of these will work for you? Great idea! I just bought one and will soon change the oil and install it.
