Default 327/TKX build update

Here’s an update on my build..

So I received my TKX/driveline the other week, my 657 block is back from machine shop, flywheel resurfaced, dropped off my rotating assembly for balancing this week. I ended up landing on a HowardsCams Hydraulic Roller Cam and purchased it, so now I’ll have to swap out springs on my trick flow DHC heads for a roller cam. Once I get parts back from balancing, can finally start assembly! I still need to buy a few things, rocker arms, push rods, carb, fuel pump, gaskets, and some small misc pieces.

for those who are unaware..

657 block, .030” out, not decked, left suffix code on pad, even tho not original to my car.
speed pro flat tops hypereutectic, 2 valve reliefs
Eagle I-Beam rods
GM steel crank turned 10/10, front snout drilled and tapped for balancer bolt
Howards Hydraulic Roller Cam
GM 3820000 oil pan, 5qt w/filter, drain plug in rear
326 water pump 1/2” outlet opening from Bill Mock
New 173, 8” non finned balancer
L79 3890490 intake
NOS corvette finned valve covers w/flaw for 67
942 & 563, 2.5” exhaust manifolds
NOS deep groove pulleys
Trick Flow Aluminum DHC 175 heads 60cc 2.02/1.60. No accessory bolt holes.
GM 10.5 flywheel
GM 403 bell housing
Mcleod street pro clutch 75125
TKX close ratio 5 speed

Nice work. I painted my new T/F heads also. Someone (NW man) will chime in and say your not fooling anyone. Who cares, your engine will look great

Are you using the Mechanical Speedo Cable ? Are you installing a "Removeable" Crossmember as well ? Keep us informed of your Installation.....

Sam,

Yes, will be using mechanical speedo cable. Not installing a removable crossmember. I’ll be installing engine/trans together as a unit. Although the removable crossmember sounds nice.

I will post more during progress, right now I’m at the mercy of the machine shop for balancing.

Thanks! Yes.. I gave up some of my “sick hours” at work, and cashed them out to buy the trans kit, otherwise, I would of kept the Muncie. I think it was worth giving up a few sick days 😂

Received my hydraulic roller cam and lifters!
With supply issues, this was hard to find and the only one I could find in stock.

My buddy at his machine shop told me a couple months ago, people come in to buy a cam, in the old days you hand picked your cam of choice, now he says you end up with the cam closest to what you want that is actually available. Strange times right now.

This cam is the closet to what I was looking for, and only one I could find available.

There's a handful of guys that frequent the cars and coffee I go to on Sundays that have C2's and first gen Camaro's that have done this TKX swap. Each and every single one of them has said it is by far the best thing they did to their cars, making them much more enjoyable to drive. I have a feeling you're really going to like the end result. Paired with that 327 it's an awesome combo.

Love seeing this thread! Looks like we are doing similar updates at the same time. Same heads. Same trans. I went with a different hydraulic Cam, hydraulic lifters and roller rockers.

I'm following along with interest!

@Ryans67vette - Impressive list of parts to make the tribute L79. I didn't see the SHP Timing cover on your list. I *think* you will need that if you're using the larger balancer.

I may be exposing my ignorance, but is there a benefit to the 'deep groove' pullies?

I believe the deep groove pulleys were for the HP engines so that the belts would hopefully not come off during high rpm

My NOS pulleys, correct numbers for a 67 L79 without power steering or AC.
