The PO of my car was a heavy smoker (he was my dad).
So the cig lighter and socket in my car were nasty dirty/rusty.. I was not able to refurb it.
I bought the repop lighter and socket... only to have lots of problems.
While it basically worked, sometimes the lighter would not 'eject', and it would run too long and have to be manually pulled out.
Then, last summer, I was 5000 miles into a 6000 mile Route 66 trip and my passenger plugged his cellphone into the socket... and everything went dead!
In fact, if not for adding a master 30A fuse (thanks Frankie, wherever you are!), it's likely I would have had a Car-B-Q situation in the middle of Texas....
So while I never plan to use the damn thing, the chrome lighter matching the rest of the ***** looks cool.. So I have been leaving the wire off the back of it for safety...
But it would be nice to be able to charge a cell phone in the car sometimes.
Does anyone make a high quality repop? Or another solution perhaps?
The cigarette lighters in these cars can’t handle cell phone use. I bought an adapter at NAPA, they have different varieties/sizes.
The one I have is hooked into my converted radio to power external music sources.
I just replaced the lighter on my 67 because it was blowing fuses and the clock and curtesy lights would not work... The replacement socket heats, but I have the opposite problem: Lighter element will not stay in....it does not even begin to stay in....I have not tried to charge anything. But at least, if I needed to light a cigar, I probably could!!! Hold in count to 7 then pull out!!!
I don’t know about the use of the repro as a lighter, never tried it, bought mine for charging my phone. Works fine. In fact, during the cold blackout we had in Texas a year or so ago, it kept my cell phone and Ipad charged.
There were 2 cigar lighter manufactures used on the old chevys . Rochester and Casco . I ve noticed the use of Casco in corvettes through out the years. They aren't hard to run across and the **** usually screws off. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the input guys... The whole thing seems 'janky'.
NO WAY a cell phone draws more current than a glowing hot filament!
IF I don't pull the lighter when it 'sticks in', it will pop the 30A fuse! That's 300+ watts! (USB limit is 15 watts!)
It's just a disaster waiting to happen..
I think I will leave the wire off the lighter socket... and perhaps wire up a USB female plug off the radio power source to use for occasional charging.. Hide it behind the console.
