Perhaps it was mentioned earlier but high lift cams in big blocks need long slot rockers to keep from bending the pushrods.

Gavin - As Westlotorn mentioned, you could see a bit of an increase in compression if you went to smaller chamber heads but they aren't cheap. The 427 I'm building will be running the Edelbrock Oval Port #60499 heads and they have small 100cc chambers. I just looked up on Mortec to see what your friends heads might be, chamber size-wise and just guessing that they are maybe up around 116cc's. Swapping heads, and using a relatively thin head gasket like .039, could gain nearly a full point of compression but that only puts you up around 9 to 1. And, a set of those heads would beat the hell out of the budget since they are over $1100 each. Just another option.

it’s all time and money Mike , you know that, when he originally bought the motor I suggested he can the iron heads and go with an aluminum set, weight savings alone it’s worth it. In the end it he who is going to make the decision to go one way or another, I can only make suggestions, getting this motor to run requires raising the compression.
