I have a '61 Corvette with a 327. I need to add a clear fuel filter to the line and have two questions. How can I make room for the filter with the hard line, and what is the best clear fuel filter to use?

Without getting into why, and to answer the question you asked, the Rochester carburetor, with the center inlet, makes it difficult to use the bowl type glass filter. It looks like it would hit on the thermostat housing. The afb with the inlet offset clears ok. I guess you could rework your hard line out of the carb with an ell if you are determined to use it. I am a fan of the Rochester carbs over the Carter wcfb. You could actually make it look pretty nice if you are handy at all.

If you must add a clear filter, I recommend making a new hard line made from scratch to plumb it. Save your existing hard line in case you ever want to undo the change.
If you must put a clear filter in do not use a plastic or the screw apart type in the pressure line.
On my 61, I put one in the rear line from the tank sending unit to the chassis line just in front of the rear tire.
If it's just temporary, can you get the proper fittings for the end of the hard line and carb (or from the fuel pump) that would allow you to plumb in a loop of rubber line and attach the filter in the rubber loop?
What is the fascination with needing a filter. If your tank is that bad where debris is going past the sock and clogging the carb filter. Then don’t you think it’s time to replace the fuel tank. They are relatively cheap and a huge safety item.

God point...Tanks Inc. makes a nice tank. I have one of there FI Tanks since I run MSD Atomic EFI System with a return. This link should take you to the Midyear page. If not go to home and work towards the Chevy...then Corvette ..then your year Non FI. Scroll down for accessories.

Flush the tank first by draining thru a paint filter in a bucket. Pour thru again if it is catching a lot of crap. Disconnect line at tank and fuel pump. Blow out with air. Rebuild fuel pump. You would be surprised what could be in it. Clear line to carb and install a new filter in carb. Good to go after that. Band-aids only last so long. Do it right the first time!
