After searching and after reading multiple threads on 17" wheels, I'm thoroughly confused.
I want to run a 17"x7" aluminum wheel with 4.25" back spacing, mounting a 225/55r17 run flat tire mounted on a 64' convertible. (I know that i will have to cut the rear bump stop frame bracket)
This car will have 1976 front spindles with factory disc brakes and 1976 rear trailing arms with factory disc brakes. (i wanted to keep it all GM Corvette stuff)
This combination is almost is almost 3/8" shorter and 3/4" wider

My C5 was equipped with run flats from the factory. They are noisy and uncomfortably stiff. They are referred to as Fred Flinstone tires for good reason. One of the best mods I've made to my C5 in 16 years of owning it was changing them to standard Michelin PS4 tires and carrying a 12 volt compressor in the car. If you like run flats, that's great, I'm just throwing in my 2 cents.
BTW - nice shop!
I was thinking the convenience of "Run Flats" and i believe a Mini Cooper uses this size, so local availability should be better.
225/55r17 tires seem to be a common size.
Van Steel " EZ Ride" suspension kit is going on this car as well as a LS3 engine. We are planning on driving it when completed.
As far as the shop, a man needs his sanctuary, but now its too big to air condition.

Reason: addition
Since you are going to use VanSteel,
buy their off set trailing arms
and you can run a bigger tire
Good luck
A Run Flat is not a good choice in tires.
Terriable ride and noise. If you are
worried about a flat, carry a phone and
AAA card with you.
I like the stance of your car. The fronts look like they might rub the outer fender lip.
My 225s should fit just nicely.
Do you think a 17"x8" with 4.5" backspace will fit with a 245/55r17?
No rubbing other than a slight rub on the frame in front at full lock. I barely have a 1/4” clearance in the rear, so I don’t see how a 245 on an 8” rim would work. The 4.5 bs in the rear will require the parking brake cable to be relocated to he top of the TA.
YES, they will. Mine with 225/55/17 on 17" wheels with 4" of BS!
Perfect, I need to break out the credit card and get to shopping.
Your car looks great.
Not being petty but how does it ride compared to the 15" tires?
Thanks,
Ron P.
Factoid,
When you say it has 1/4" clearance on the inside rear. Is that from the parking cable bracket on the outside of the trailing arm?
I believe my 1976 rear trailing arms have the parking brake cable located on the top of the trailing arms, which is why i was looking for C3 arms.
Hopefully Chevrolet intended for the C3s to have wider wheels and tires, so maybe i can squeeze an 8" wheel with 4.5" backspacing.
If the stars align and the good Lord is willing, I can get a 17x7 & 225/55r17 on the front and a17x8 & 245/55r17 on the rear.
Somehow i cant get the staggered tires on a hotrod out of my head. (Chip Foose says its all in the stance)
