I always did the install from the bottom without too much trouble. The bolts obviously needs to be in the shifter body loose prior to putting the shifter into position, and then move it around until the bolt drops into the hole to thread in.

Just pulled mine as part of the flywheel project (L-79). Once I removed the aft transmission mount and the other bracket that covers the tops of the exhaust pipes (under car exhaust) I had reasonable access to the two shifter bolts. Pretty sure the shorter lower bolt was removable, the upper one can be loosened but would remain in the assembly due to tunnel interference. I did this with the shifter boot still in place as several of the boot mounting screws are pretty well stuck in place and the philips heads are beginning to round out. I plan to drill them out and replace the riveted transmission tunnel receiver. This way I could try to catch the upper bolt from above if necessary upon reassembly.

I had the same problem with the Muncie shifter on my 68. I ended up grinding a point on the bottom bolt. That did the trick for starting the bolt into the mount. Jerry

If the problem is the tunnel is too tight (close) to shifter that you can't get the bolts in you may have to move trans toward passenger side about 1 inch or 2. This is easily done with floor jack under trans, remove trans mounting bolts , raise trans about 1/4 inch, remove rubber mount ,lower trans about 1 inch and push tailshaft of trans toward passenger side about 1-2 inches . You should then have room to start the bolts. This is a simple task and can save a lot of time and frustration. Been there and none that.
