When a post is @xxxxxx user name it's a tag. Social media thing. twittter etc.
So if a post is "tagged" it is sent to twitter or some other social media? If I have no user names listed in my profile for instant messaging I assume that nothing is sent out ???
If someone tags you, you get a notification. This is so you can take a look at the thread and see why you got tagged. It's a way of saying, "Hey, cbernhardt, come look at this." It doesn't go to outside social media.

If I want to be notified that someone has made a contribution to a thread I can subscribe to it. The converse is also true.
Tagging seems like an involuntary way of being subscribed to a thread. Not exactly the same, but similar.
I don't see the value of tagging.

I know Mods/Admins use it a lot. Many members do, too. Sometimes someone might be looking at a post or a thread that they would like a couple others to consider as well. They are tagged and that way they know someone would like them to read it. This is not something that can be accomplished by subscribing.
It’s a very useful tool to use for a member to alert another member to read something. There’s no involuntary aspect to it.
If you don’t want to use it, or read something, that’s fine, too.
