Default key knockout code

I a looking for information regarding the knock out on a 1957 ignition key. I have 2 keys, identical, octagon head, Briggs Stratton on which the knock out is not stamped. My car is early March build. I think the font is 1/6 inch. I have a set if 1/16 numerical stamps. However, i have not been able to find information on what 4 digit codes were used for the 1957 keys. My lock smith said the cut on the key from shoulder to end is 123523. Dealerships back in the day must have had a cross reference sheet linking the 4 digit knock out code to the 6 digit cut of the blade of the key. I thank you in advance for any help you can give me on this. John Goedeken 319-361-9720

I believe the code is stamped on the lock cylinder . . you have to take the lock apart to see the numbers.

I am surprised your locksmith doesn't have the code and cutting information. He might not want to do the search to find the 4 number code for the 6 number cut.
I think Google found what you are looking for, but you will need to do some self education. I think you are looking for Lock Code Numbers, have fun.

John, I find no listing of your key in the series 8000-9499 codes GM used from 1935 to 1966. You may have a replacement? It’s possible I overlooked it. Check the lock as mentioned for 4 numbers.

Also, the numbers you have are the key cut data needed. Only reason for a code is to obscure the number you have. So unless you just want to stamp your lock, you need no more information. I think I would delete that post so no one might use it to cut a key and take your car without hot wiring it.

If you have a key that works, the locksmith can decode it- see below. The key I had for my 67 was "the son" of many previous keys and required a knack to turn in the ignition. Problem solved when I cut a new key to the code.

I stamped mine with 1/16 number stamps, they came out pretty well!

When I worked at Reedmans in the 70’s one of my responsibility was to make keys. We had a hand held unit that would not h the blank. We had a reference book to look up the codes and set the tool. On GM cars the glovebox lock had the code on the cylinder. It was the same as the trunk. Usually when the keys were missing on the used car lot they were in the trunk.
