Default Triangular underbody shields purpose?

There are four triangular shields under a c2 - two large and two smaller. They are in the front section of the vehicle and where the frame necks down to accomodate the front suspension. I have always wondered just what purpose they serve. Are they simply a shield for dirt and water? do they have some functionality in cooling the engine as in aiding air exiting the engine compartment? Are they there for body airflow such as a reduction in nose lift at speed? Has anyone noticed any change in engine cooling with or without the shields? Just the wondering and wandering thoughts of a Corvette owner for 57 years. What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are just what you said, and may well be supported by the deceased engineers. I had my large shields louvered. Did it make any difference, I have no idea. All of this is nothing to worry about. Just make sure the shields are in place. Dennis

I dont think they were there for aerodynamics. C2's at speed were never far away from being "bad airplanes" as Zora liked to put it.

The GM AIM denotes them as "Shield Assembly, Splash". So, I suppose that is a good indicator of their intended purpose.

Take them off then drive through a puddle of water at normal driving speed - you will figure out what their purpose is real fast.

But, not sure how much they really help.
