Is there a solid state voltage regulator available for a C1 ? I replaced my generator a couple hundred miles ago and all was well. Today i took it out for a short ride and the ampere meter was pegged at plus 35 when running at 2000 RPM . Never acted like that before
I dont believe there is anyone converting old regulators to solid state. Last person converting them passed about 5 years ago.. Best to find a NOS Delco on Ebay. Your profile states you have a 62 so a 35 or 30 amp regulator is what will work.003 and 168 regulators are fairly common replacments .found on Ebay..

Since regulators used with generators house three elements (voltage regulator, current regulator and cutout) they have yet to be produced in a solid state version, unlike alternator regulators which regulate voltage only. There was a cottage industry with one known cottage producing a home brew electronic version that is to my knowledge unavailable. A reproduction is made, right here in the USA, and it will work, though not as well or for as long as the Delco original. The NOS versions on eBay are not all they may seem. These are not rebuildable though some folks pretend they are. Many originals sold as NOS are take offs, used, maybe defective. Some folks couldn't throw them out and then, 45 years later they are NOS! So be careful buying them used.
My suggestion is you pull yours and see that the resistors on the back are intact & not burned. Then take the cover off. Put on your reading glasses and carefully examine the contacts on all three elements. Get some crocus cloth (NOT sandpaper) and carefully clean both sides of all the contacts. Be careful not to bend or disturb anything. This might get it to go longer but eventually a mechanical regulator has had it. Otherwise buy a replacement from NAPA. You can use your original Delco cover on the new unit.

Don-
The regulator in the photo is yellow cad plated. Delco didn't do that. The reproduction maker does. So this eBay gem is likely a parts store regulator available from NAPA with a Delco cover. See what I mean?

Dan,
Since the 80s the Delco replacment regulators have been cad plated. I dont know who GM licenses to produce the replacments but they seem to work fine. Even Amazon sells them
Had a problem similar to that. My voltage regulator quit. Bought two different regulators. Both were putting 18volts to the battery. Had to go to a generator shop to find the right one. All regulators are not the same. Ehlin lists 5 different regulators 5 different prices but no nomenclature to describe them.

Don, I understand that, I have one of those on my 56 Cadillac. My point is that parts advertised on eBay as NOS are often not NOS but recent reproductions as in the link you posted. Someone unfamiliar might conclude the unit you posted, with its Delco cover is a genuine NOS Delco unit. Instead its a reproduction available new, down the street. Just want folks aware.
