Default Need new rag joint

I need a new rag joint for a non power steering 65. I see products from Ididit for an installtion kit for original harness, but it includes wires. Not sure the reason for the wires for a mechanical part that goes between the steering box and the steering column. Can someone point me to a new part or educate me on this ?

Not sure what the wires are for, but the original rag joints had a brass / copper strip between the upper and lower parts of the rag joint to complete the ground in the steering shaft. I believe this is needed for electrical continuity within the steering shaft. Maybe some of the professionals can confirm or deny my assumption.

It doesn't matter if it's manual or PS, same rag was used. If you have a tele column, then you have a better chance of hitting the lottery than finding a NOS one. If standard steering NOS ones do show up, expect to pay $300+ for them. I don't think I have any left for std 63-66's, 67-e69 I do.
If you go with the current, new imported $50 rags or kits, the material is not as rigid, if you are concerned about NCRS they won't be close. I don't care for any of the new ones, including Borgeson's version.
Good luck, if yours is ripped now, don't drive the car. A u-joint will work, flaming river sells them. The originals were grounded across the rag halves, but the strap broke a lot of times, so by 72 they were wire mesh grounded which worked much better.

I believe that the horn will not work if there's no continuity between the upper and lower sections.

Both my 65 and 66 have tele columns. Fr now all is well I am hoping that some time soon someone will come up with the right rubber to repo these things again. In the mean time I guess the only alternative is a U joint. Do these need to be grounded for correct horn operation or are they self grounding?

Will this work? What exactly is this? Is it a complete rag joint and wires, or is it a rebuild kit for the old joint. My old joint didn't have wires and my car is not NCRS.

I don't have an old joint to rebuild. I threw it away when I started the frame off 12 years ago, never thinking it would be hard to get a new one. So can you point me to one that will work for me ?

That's a borgeson rag- thinner material and set screws used, not as good as OEM.

The ground strap completed the circuit from the steering column to the frame, however your horn may still work if it grounds elsewhere. U-joints are conductive so they're grounded once installed.

At the risk of ridicule on what I did or should've done (newbie still learning), I recently had my rag joint rebuilt on a recently acquired '65. It's the standard coupler and I believe my guy uses the rag component from a new kit and uses the original coupler components. Before and after pictures.

Not cheap but neither is a C2.

I put a NOS on my car a couple years ago and since have bought two more NOS. I am sure my wife will throw them away when I an gone but until then I will keep on packratting!

Your old rag joint LOOKED fine? Was there a problem with it? If not then you traded a good factory one for a lower quality part.

It was a little sloppy, not sure if it was this component or the overall steering refresh but it's tighter now. Didn't drive bad before, but a little better now.
