I think what Gary was cautioning you about is to ensure that the bolt is centered within the hole in the coupling, beneath the nut, before tightening. If it is not, as the coupling is being pinched closed, any interference between the coupling and the threads on the bolt will create a sort of broaching action while the coupling moves, thereby damaging ("rolling") the threads on the bolt.
