I just ordered my interior parts from Al Knoch and I asked if they had a PPG paint code for matching their color. They said they do not, that was a little surprising. You would think this would come up often.
I’m sure the paint store will need to make a match but I was going to start with an old Ditzler code first. Problem is, I’m finding a couple codes.
Anyone know which one I need for ‘bright blue’? Is there any chance that both of these were used, some parts one color and others got another? Dark Bright Blue sounds counter intuitive.
Lo Gloss (3):
Dark Bright Blue: DIA - 13228 Medium Bright Blue - DIA - 13071
the lacquer paint sold by top flight in quart cans sprays very well and looks great. I do have a small bit left of bright blue lacquer left from my Chevelle from PPG but the can is at my dads house so I have no clue what the number is
Ditzler was owned by PPG since the 1920s. Have you looked for the color catalog sheets for your year? (You can sometimes copy the pic images from hi-rez eBay listings.)
Thanks everyone. I doubt anyone is mixing lacquer anymore. I’ve searched the chips and I’m not able to locate any for interior colors with chips. 65 is different than 66-67 but I think it’s down to the CA stuff. I’ll check with my PPG distributor tomorrow and see if they have anything.
CA doesn’t have any tech sheets online, when you buy a quart what does it mix with or is it RTS?
The original question I had was the two paint codes, does anyone know what the two codes or for? What parts get sprayed with which code? I had some of my hardtop trim parts out today and they look gloss, sort of. Gloss was another set of paint codes.
Quick update. The color you get from Corvette America does not match the dash. It matches the seat and door panel material but not the dash. I noticed when I was prepping everything that dash, side panels and lower windshield strip are darker. I sprayed everything and my new dash pads showed up and nothing matched. Either I spray the new dash pads or find the right color. The paint chip that Ralph posted is what I need to match. Dropped the dash pad off at my local PPG shop for a match. Said they didn’t have a formula loaded for any current product.
The 66 L72 I bought in June '21 had a body-off done to it by the previous owner way back in the early 90's. He still had the paint he used then and that came with the car.
When he moved from New Jersey to The Villages in central Florida, he figured he'd never need the aux hardtop so he sold it off.
I like having both tops and bought one in need of work from a fellow Forum Member out in Pasadena. It happened to be a 67 vintage top and had the Black Vinyl covering which I like.
The headliner/rear window/weatherstripping was all shot and the interior trim had been rattle can painted black but apparently been Bright Blue to begin with and Bright Blue is the color of my interior.
I used the paint he had leftover and it turned out decent. Unfortunately, the codes off this R-M Acrylic Lacquer Paint probably won't be of any help to you due to how old it is but thought I'd throw this out there anyway. I did not use the Clear.
