I'm getting ready to order my Tremec from SST.
Going with the close ratio and .68 fifth gear for my L79 with 3.36 Posi
Those of you that have upgraded did you:
- Also upgrade to hydraulic?
- Order their clutch, flywheel and bell housing?
Option B. There is no reason to go with a hydraulic clutch and every reason to stay with the Z-bar. The TKO600 in my ‘64 sits behind a 560 ft/lb of torque Blueprint 427 sbc, so I ordered their stronger clutch. It is easier to operate than the stock clutch in my L72. Plus, I have none of the engineering requirements of a hydraulic clutch in a car with a fiberglass firewall.
I liked the feel of my clutch prior to the TKO install but told my installer to use the new clutch/pp provided with the kit. Hated feel of kit clutch/pp. Learned the “old” clutch was a Centerforce. Pulled just installed TKO and installed a new Dual Friction clutch/PP. SST may offer an upgrade now. Otherwise Love SST and the trans. Clean up the flywheel. You’re gonna love 5th. Cheers, Larry
I put a ls3 and tremec 6 speed in my 2005 Silverado. Hate the hydraulic clutch because I have ended up replacing the hydraulic throwout bearing every 7K to 10K miles. truck currently on its 4th throwout bearing and its starting to scream. If I had to do it ll over, I'd get a tremec 5 speed and utilize the stock clutch hydraulic system . the 5 speed allows for OEM throwout fork and common throwout bearing. mike mccagh
I put in a Tremec in my 66. It has a 4:10 rear. it makes driving on the highway so much quieter especially with the side pipes. I used the stock clutch set up as well as the stock bellhousing. I did use the recommended roller pilot bearing. Don't forget to "dial in the bellhousing". I used the opportunity to balance the flywheel and the pressure plate. I also changed the ring gear. Jerry
I went with a hydraulic twin disk. Albeit my engine made 654 ft/lb and I'm currently having BES engineering design a new top end that I hope to pick up another 150-200 from. Better to over engineer it than go back and clean up a mess over saving a few bucks IMHO
