Hello all, I am rebuilding my headlight buckets. I see that the factory used a red colored primer. Does anyone know what type it is. Also does it matter what type i use? The buckets are aluminum.
It can make a big difference in what color you use. I am not talking about authenticity. The color of the primer or sealer under the paint will make a big difference in the look of the finished product. If you are doing the whole car, try a few test panels to see what you prefer.
I just painted my 67 with single stage polyurethane. All I did on the buckets was to use a DA sander to take the paint off, wipe it down with cleaner and use the same polyester primer that was used on the rest of the car. BTW I have always assumed the buckets were some kind of pot metal.
Original aluminum buckets were first painted with zinc chromate (lime green) then with the body, primed with red oxide. Next a dark grey sealer, then the top color coats.

Thanks,
i was wondering why there was a lime green color where the shafts mounted.
