I have done this before but forgot the tricks. Fortunately, I have a lift to raise the car. The right side looks like a nightmare with the alternator, battery, and heater hoses. I plan to remove the alternator and am considering draining the radiator and removing the heater hoses to get clearance. Any comments?
I just did this on mine a couple of weeks ago. I didn't remove any heater hoses or accessories and mine also has A/C which makes access on the right side even worse. So, it can certainly be done without removing that stuff.
I don't remove anything to install wires. However, I do use Taylor 8mm wires that are unfinished on the dizzy end. I crimp that end to get the length just right.

I replaced all the plug wires on my 65 with new reproduction AC Delco wires. You have to run them from underneath in order to get them into the correct retainers and up between the block and the motor mounts. It's a tight fit but you can squeeze the boots through.
