I had the same thing with mine. I sent my shifter to Hurst Online and they rebuilt it and replaced the welded handle plate with the plate to allow the bolt-on T-handle. I have the welded handle for garage art.
I had the same thing. My '60 came with a Muncie and Comp + and, having owned one before, love the way the Hurst shifts but wanted a stock looking shifter. I cut off the Hurst handle, ground away half the stub thickness, drilled and tapped it for the bolt on 'stock look' shifter. Cake and eat it.

Thanks for that I'm assuming the bolt holes are 90 deg. to the transmission, did you have to remove it from the housing, almost looks like you have to.
Many like that original handle shape and they don't make an exact copy for the bolt in shifters. You could sell yours and buy a new one or maybe someone will trade with you.

It was about 6 years ago so TBH I don't remember but you're probably right on having to remove it. Was real easy to do, just get the replacement lever first so you can see how much/where to cut it and where to line up/drill the holes.
I have a Hurst for a 63-65 on the Muncie in the 56, and a bolt-on replica 56-58 handle. The result is the positive shift of a Hurst and a factory appearance.
