Default Tach etc...

Hey all - does anyone know if the tachometer and odometer in a '66 are tied together in any way? My tach quite working a while back but I noticed later on that the odometer wasn't working either. When I fix the tach, will the odometer work again as well?

Each can work or break independently of the other in my experience. On my 67 the speedometer gears in the cluster stripped (also taking out the odometer/trip odometer) but the tach continued to work.

The tach is driven by a cable from the distributor. The speedometer/odometer are driven by a cable from the transmission. They have nothing to do with each other.

If they’re both original then it should be no surprise that they both break around the same time frame.

They're not tied together in any way. Completely independent operation.

Tach should be an easy fix (start with the cable).

The speedometer / trip meter is not as easy. There is a little gear made out of cheese that fails in the speedo. This will require the dash to come out and the speedo can go out for rebuild.

Good luck!

If it makes you feel better, it's not unusual on cars of this age. You'll find lots of info in previous threads.
