Default 8080 wheels

Wahhh.

Finally got my wheels and tires back, dismounted, so I could examine the stamps on the inside of the rims before I have the Diamond Backs mounted. Wanted to document the originality and 63 stamps and markings and…

… didn’t recognize the markings on the face of the first one. Had the nubs by the valve stem, but no GM stamp. Instead, a “K1, 89.” Then I noticed the mild “step” design of the contour of the inner rim, rather than the smooth curve of the 63-4.

The inner stamp was right… 15x5 1/2 K… but everything else was wrong and the other 2 expected stamps werent there. Then on the third wheel (they are all the same), a remaining sticker:

GM over the counter replacement, correct?

I guess I could make the argument that I’d rather drive on essentially new wheels (the car was barely driven after its restoration in the 90s), than wheels that have been banging around for 60 years. Still disappointed.

Any other input on 8080 wheels?

More pics of stamps:

I think the telltale for factory installed originals are the “bug” do these wheels have that?

If the wheel cover was removed, its obvious if you know what you are looking at, particularly the GM stamp not there.

The 8080 wheels were the GM service replacement wheels for all 64 earlier drum brake cars with 5 1/2" rims. The 1965-66 5 1/2" rim for disc brakes was available in service for years and is different than the 8080, the 8080 will not fit over the disc brake caliper of a 65-66 car.

Hemi, what is "the bug"?

It is an imprint on the inside of the wheel that the manufacturer stamped in them. I too was not aware of them until prompted to look when I was selling my factory installed wheels from my 1965 coupe. They may not have been a 1964 wheel thing. I deleted the pictures of this from my photos after I sold the wheels or I would post the picture of it. Maybe someone else has a picture they can post.

Got it... that's the tire and rim association wheel stamp. "the bug". It does kind of look like a bug now that I think of it.

You mean the stamp other than the Kelsey-Hayes stamp, on the left?

No, but it looks like the lighter stamp to the left but can see for sure.

The 8080 wheels are totally fine for a driver. Very easy to differentiate from the OE 63-64 wheels visually, but nearly all original 63-64 wheels are bound to have some condition issues at this point in time.

The repro 63-64 wheels have the same profile as the original, but they have a wide MIG weld between the web and the rim. So, really not solving any issue versus having the 8080 wheels because both are visually incorrect.

I agree, the 8080 wheels are nice for a driver and they look like there are in good shape from the pictures.

I’m not planning on getting it judged, but I think calling it a “driver” is a little harsh.

Its looks fine with these wheels on it but it bugs me.

Beautiful car, sorry I used the word driver. Keep your eyes open and you'll find a nice set of original wheels.

That's a nice-looking car. My point was that nearly all original 63-64 wheels are going to have some condition issues, whereas it's far more likely to have a straight set of 8080's.

I have a set of original 63-64 wheels, and a set of repros if you can't live without them.
