Default 1956 Question

I recently bought a 1956 corvette. The previous owner had it judged and it earned NCRS Top Flight and Bloomington Gold survivor awards.
My question is, my 56 corvette has a pull throttle that goes to the front carburetor. What is the purpose?
This car is a 225 HP 2x4s, heater delete, radio delete
The pull throttle **** is in the spot where the heat temp. control **** should be in the dash.
Thank you

Manual cruise control? Manual fast idle? Couldn't get the foot off the brake on the accelerator fast enough on a steep hill?

The automatic choke is in the rear carb.
The car has an automatic transmission.

Hmmm, interesting.

It may be as a failsafe for a hot start assist, to open the front carb throttle plates to suck in any spent fuel sitting there if the driver floors the pedal to open rear carb plates.

On a dual four setup it dangerous to floor it on both carbs on hot restart. Raw fuel can sit on the front carb throttle plates. On hot restart, driver should only go pedal "half" way to the floor so front carb stays dry.

Happened to me once, engine caught fire when fuel drained out the front carb throttle shafts on a hot day, hard left down hill out of a parking lot. This after I floored it for hot restart. Front squirters loaded up the carb and nowhere to go, except out to the hot ex manifold. Backfired, then ignited the spent fuel.

I have the story here somewhere. Found It.... Here

More in This post. I talked about tying a string to the front carb.

Rich’s post brought back a similar experience in my 57 with dual wcfbs. Returning home from a test ride, car backfired and farted on last turn to driveway. I foolishly floored it, then came the smoke! Coasted down my gravel drive to garage, jumped out after opening hood and grabbed fire extinguisher. It didn’t work!! Panicking, my only other option was a garden hose some 100 feet away. I arched the water stream to the engine, finally putting it out. I had some foam filter elements on the car, before I had been able to get correct mesh ones. Foam burns real good!!! Fortunately, after cleanup and replacing a vacuum hose along with correct air cleaners, all was good. I got very lucky.

Properly rebuilt and adjusted WCFBs should be very trouble free. I have an early 2x4 setup on a 389 in the 51 Chevy and they work great.

True, but how many out there have brand new castings and brand new throttle shafts? That's where the fuel leaks out.

They can be trouble free, as long as you don't load the front carb with fuel on a hot engine.

NICE '56....................I was first confused because I was thinking of my '57. The '57 283CI single four barrel carb put out 220 HP.
I currently have a 1958 Corvette dual quad with an electric choke and it runs GREAT!

Picture of my '57. Sold it November 2009 and now lives in Nice, France.

Re-living my high school days with my current 1958 Corvette. Except that my HS '58 was a four speed FUEL injected car.

LOVE THE COLOR...........................
LG,
Mike
