Hi all, A question about the 67 bb hood insert. What is the purpose and is it necessary. I ordered an aftermarket 67 bb style hood. Haven't seen it yet but does it have to have an insert.
Thanks

As Nowhere Man said, purely decorative. If you are going to put one on, do it before you paint your hood. I didn't think about this on my aftermarket stinger hood before I had it painted. You have to cut a hole in the hood for the insert. (Note the insert is solid and does not have a hole in it for air flow.) Now I'm too afraid to mess up my hood cutting the hole that I'm running insertless. Patrick
As others said, it's purely decorative. It adds just a bit of chrome dress-up contrast to the "opening". Once you get the hood, examine the opening and how it would look without anything covering the edges and inside of the hood scoop.
I think whether the hood needs to be cut for the insert depends on how accurately an aftermarket hood is reproduced. The factory hood only needed 3 holes drilled to mount the chrome insert. The added on bit where the screws come through (seen in the pic below) is a piece of fiberglass bonded to the main hood panel; the hoods were made this way at the body fabrication plant, not on the assembly line.

I wasn't thinking when I first tried installing an insert on my aftermarket hood. I drilled the three holes thinking the insert would mount just fine then quickly realized the insert has "depth" to it and that needs a place to go. I ended up filing in the holes and used touch-up paint. Looks OK from 10'. Need to fix it right eventually or just be brave and cut the hole.

Patrick03, have you considered painting the insert location's vertical back a flat/semi black? That may go far to create the operational hood scoop look, at least from a distance - which is the same for the factory insert.

That's a good suggestion! Thanks, I'll give that a try. If I'm happy with the results, I'll just leave well enough alone.
