Default 2 Very Basic Questions

2 very basic questions. I'm reinstalling the steering column in my '61 after changing out top bearing on the shaft. Now I can't remember whether the steering wheel spokes make a "Y" or an upside down "Y" when the front wheels are pointed straight forward. Also, are the 3 screws (clutch head screws?) that hold on the horn contact suppose to be seated or are they left loose to allow more play in the horn contact?

The wheel forms a "Y", and the contact screws should be tight.

'Y' so you can see the speedo. Nothing left loose.

Now that I know what's up (questionable), at least with regards to the wheel, I need to confirm that the dogs on the center hub that turn off the turn indicators are facing the right direction. I had assumed that they faced towards the centerline of the car but with the spokes of the steering wheel making a "Y", I think they need to be facing towards the left side of the car. I'll attach a photo so you know what I'm referring to as "dogs".

Many thanks! It must worry you that a knucklehead like myself asking such basic questions is a part of the C1 community. I'm hopeful that we will have this beast back on the road soon. New electric fuel pump mounted in the fuel tank to keep the gas as cool as possible before it gets to the fuel injection, all new wiring, power windows and electric power assist steering (note the smaller steering wheel) should make it more reliable and fun to drive. Thanks again for your help!

Doesn't worry me at all. I put EPAS on my 60 and the smaller steering wheel. After a couple of days, I took the wheel off and sent it back and reinstalled the original. Two reasons, it looked odd because I'm used to seeing the traditional big wheel, and the top of the steering wheel blocked my vision of the speedometer. And really, a third reason, the original was already paid for.

The screws should be tight.

Talk about a knucklehead, that was me when I had mine apart. I had replaced my dash pad and was up early one Saturday to get it all back together. I still had the cuts to make for the vents, speaker etc. I worked all day and about 10pm that night I was down to those clutch head screws you are talking about. Where were they? I mean, I just saw them 10 minutes ago I thought. I ripped my garage apart and they had vanished apparently. I searched well over an hour with no luck. It just so happened a Japanese beetle landed on the back of my shoulder and I reached to pull him off when I felt something else there too. Apparently when I was on my back under the dash I came in contact with a piece of tape and those screws with my back. I’m running around like an idiot for an hour and they were on my back the whole time. Now that’s a knucklehead!

Jasonsamara, I can probably top your Japanese beetle disappearing magic act but I have to say, it won't be easy! Nice looking car. You ditched the stock tach for an electrical one? Looks cool. And thanks 65GGvert for your advice. I may end up using my stock wheel like you did after adding the EPAS to my '61. Like everyone, I have to straddle the stock wheel which is awkward but the smaller wheel I purchased spoils the look. Once I finish the rewiring I'll give both a try. I'm doing a Road and Track "Route to Vine" rally next week in Napa (using a friends 911) but hopefully I can get things button up on the C1 soon. I've added power windows which went in with a minimum amount of cuts, contusions and cursing but I'm now wondering whether the double switches on the driver side should be arranged so the forward switch operates the passenger window or the reverse. Anyone happen to know?

Rewiring my '61 has been moving at a glacial but steady pace. I'm down to my final connections but of course I'm stumped on them. The harness was prepared by Lectric Ltm. and has been fairly easy to follow but I'm left with an orange and white connection that is intended for the "courtesy light" that I can't find. I don't see anything existing on the car that would qualify as a courtesy light. There must be one since I have two courtesy light switches in the doors, but where's the light?

A final wire from the harness seeking a home is labeled "heater switch". I also have an existing loose wire coming from the heater fan. I'm waiting on a new fan speed/defrost control from Corvette Central since mine is a mess and couldn't be repaired. It's back ordered but I'm hoping it will turn up in the next week or so. My wiring diagram doesn't show the fan wire circuit but I assume the harness's "heater switch" wire and wire from the fan both connect to the fan speed/defrost control. Do these switches have two contacts and if so, are they marked in some way for power in and power out?

Thanks as always for your help!

Tom
