From a quick look, I am guessing you have a Passenger car (includes Corvettes) built in 1968, on May 20th. Are the casting numbers of the case 3925660? That would verify the 1968 build. The small C or whatever it is should be A for M20, B for M21, and C for M22, all capital letters.
I have no clue what the VIN number is for.

It's from some kind of a 1968 Pontiac.
1=Chev
2=Pont
3=Olds
4=Buick
The U is the assembly plant. I believe the Detroit/Hamtramck plant.

Detroit Hamtramck opened in the mid-eigthies, and none of the vehicles assembled there ever had a manual transmission. GM did have a gear and axle plant that straddled the Detroir/Hamtramck border, but a Muncie trans would have been built in Muncie, Indiana.

based on the “28U”, it looks like a 1968 Pontiac assembled in Lordstown Ohio…. They built 1st gen Firebirds here, not sure what else…

from Wikipedia:

The plant's initial products were Chevrolet's full-size lineup (Caprice, Impala, Bel Air, Biscayne), then America's best-selling vehicle, as well as the first generationPontiac Firebird. The Firebird and Chevrolet's full-size models would be moved to other plants by 1971, when the plant would add conversion van production and begin production on the Chevrolet Vega.

The letter in the VIN is NOT for the plant where the transmission was built ----------------------it is for the AUTOMOBILE assembly plant where the transmission was installed in the car.

I never said “U” was the plant where the transmission was built. You stated that the assembly plant was ”Detroit-Hamtramck”. D-H WAS a GM automobile assembly plant, where “transmissions were installed in the car”, just not in the ‘60s as you said. Detroit-Hamtramck didn’t build anything in the 60’s, IT DIDN’T EXIST, I know, I helped open it.

I was not sure of the plant for a U. But from what I could find, it looked like the U was for the Detroit/Hamtramck plant.
The 28U is Pont-1968-Plant. What plant would the U be for?

The U is the assembly plant. I believe the Detroit/Hamtramck plant.

My 68 Charger and 69 Dart Swinger 340 were both final assembly at Hamtramck plant before the plant was shut down and sold. XP29F8B & LM23P9B, B being Hamtramck

It was a HUGE plant. I did not know it was a GM plant at one time.

I would have to research it for sure dates but I believe Chrysler had it for years and then sold it to GM.

Sold to GM in 1985. Built Chrysler products to 1980.

The GM Detroit-Hamtramck plant was built from scratch in the early-eighties for GM. No Chrysler Corp.vehicles were ever built in that plant. I don’t know what was on the site previously, I think many homes were torn down, but it was all gone by 1980.

Chrysler had other plants in the area.
