Default 66 427 date coded starter

So I purchased a correct date coded starter for my 66 427 and finally got around to installing it. The problem, no matter which way or how much I shim it,

the starter only engages half the time. When I compare the old starter to the rebuilt correct starter I see a difference in the mounting deck height of about 1/8", with the old starter being shorter. Would this be enough to cause the starter to not engage consistently? How difficult would it be to put the old mounting portion on the rebuilt starter?

Swapping noses fixed the issue. So an 1/8" at the mount face does matter.
