Default Heads

When I bought my 1966, I realized it was going to be a project for my dad and I to work on. There's plenty to do, but I got into a discussion with a co-worker about what type of heads I had on the engine. I had verified that the block and the tranny are numbers matching, but knew that the carb had been replaced. Well, from the pictures below, these are the head markings on the heads that I have. They don't match and without taking the valve covers off, I am assuming that neither one is stock - but I could be wrong there.

Passenger Side Head

Driver Side Head

So maybe some of you saw that a set of 'double hump heads' were posted on Facebook. The seller claims they were out of a 64, but wasn't sure (I assume he is saying that because of the '64' in the casting. See below:

Questions:
- Does the '64' above the casting number indicate the year it was cast?
- What do the other numbers below the casting number mean?
- The guys is asking $1,000 for them. What are they worth, site unseen?
- Any thoughts on performance differences between what I have and these hump heads?

The heads on your engine are 69 on up heads.

the 461 heads came in both 2.02 valve and 1.94. I don't see 1K

The end symbols on your existing heads are definitely different. I don't know what either symbol represents but I'd hazard a guess they are smog heads.

$1000 is too much to pay for double hump heads. Something in the range of $250 - $400 feels more appropriate. For $1000 you can buy a brand new set of heads which will outperform the old double hump variety and they come with a warranty.

Here's some numbers that you can research without pulling a valve cover.

Those are late model heads on the car. I think I have a set of 66 dbl hump heads all redone.

You are right to question the heads that came on your 66 as incorrect. 461s double hump heads are the correct ones but for $1,000 they would need to have been gone through at significant expense, like new valve guides, 3 angle valve seat ground, new 2.01 valves, and magnifluxed to confirm no cracking, maybe skim cut to ensure true (not warped) and pocket ported, plus new springs/retainers/valve guide seals. Most folks are asking no more than $500 for a set of double hump heads and can't hardly get rid of them.

You can search the For Sale section for 461 heads and possibly find some that are still for sell. Good luck

I just went through this for my 65. I paid $400 plus tax for a bare set which were the correct date code, magnafluxed and pressure tested which is probably the end price but I wanted date correct parts
and they were hard to find. I have the valves, springs and hardware from my cracked heads which will be used in the replacements.
Shipping is an additional cost which if correctly packed will cost about $200.00. My total was $646.00. I will have close to 1K in them when finished but will know exactly what I have
for a finished product.
On the heads you questioned about the date code is next to the "64" it is C 14 4 which is March 14 1964. Not sue what the extra "64" signifies as I don't think it is common.
You can find 461 heads on Ebay and the forum most have the smaller 1.94 intake valves but a few have the larger 2.02 intakes valves.
There are several other heads that have the double humps 462 and 291 which have varying combustion chamber volumes which will affect the compression ratio.
If you are not concerned about the correct date but want the correct look of the so called double hump or camel hump heads any set of 461 heads will suffice.

Given the end symbols and accessory drive bolt holes, I think it's more likely those heads were cast in 1974.
