Kinda ugly gap!
Well, I have tried to install a new blinker switch on my 67 with telescopic. I have done this 5 times and they still do not work. I'm past the push in the clutch and the horn honks and getting shocked. Nothing of the blinkers works at all. Part two is I tried again yesterday and the telescopic system is rough. The column pulls out I feel way to far. Also, why such a large space when the column is extended? See pictures. Shouldn't there be some kind of covering in the space? No left over parts...
When the telescopic column is adjusted, by turning the lock ring counterclockwise, to move aft and forward the entire upper column moves including the turn signal housing. So there is obviously an issue.
2nd. If your horn honks when you push the clutch probably the wiring from the turn signal switch is damaged from interference with the clutch linkage under the dash. When you push the clutch pedal the damaged wires ground causing the horn to honk. Other wires may also be damaged causing you other signal issues.
If it was my car I would take the column out of the car and rebuild the whole thing. Not a lot of parts to it and much easier on a bench. If you take it out take a close look at the steering shaft where the lower bearing surrounds it. The shaft is often worn in there and out of spec.
